You've Arrived - Now What?

Pre-game

• Arrive at your location 15-20 minutes before your Trivia Mafia event begins.

• Connect with the bar manager and get your three prizes (typically gift cards). These are given out for first and second place, and for either third place or another fun designation (best team name, best team spirit, etc).

• Set up your sound system and start playing music (if you are DJing the event). Verify the mic is working.

  • Announce that trivia is starting soon, and that you’ll be walking around to check for players.

• Pass out answer sheets/app cards ~5-10 minutes prior to start.

SAMPLE SCRIPT:

Hi! Would you like to play trivia this evening?
Of course!*

Have you played with Trivia Mafia before?
(if Yes) Perfect, then you know about our policy about not looking up answers. And the Image Round for this week makes sense to you? Great. Good luck!

(if No) It’s pretty simple: I’ll be reading the questions aloud over the PA over the next hour and a half or so. You can start working on the Image Round now! Then at the end we’ve also got the Sound Round [or Second Image Round], where I’ll play several snippets of songs, and you’ll be trying to identify the name of the song AND the artist or band — half point for each. And don’t forget to pick a fun team name, so I can find you when you win. Also, we ask that you not use your cell phone to Google any info or call lifelines – “Use your noodle, not your Google!”

*If they say no, give them the option to join later, and move on. We don’t want to do a hard sell.

Mic Check

• When you hop on the mic, introduce yourself, and say “I’m here with Trivia Mafia.” Feel free to add colorful commentary in your own personal style.

Remind everyone of our two rules: Don’t use cheat, and don’t shout out the answers. Use our tagline if you like: “Use your noodle, not your Google!”

• Inform everyone of our team size limit: Teams are limited to eight players. If a team has more than eight, they have two options: Separate into two teams, or take a 1-point penalty at the end of the game for every player over eight. (So a team of nine would subtract 1 point at the end; a team of 10 would subtract 2 points, etc.) If they’re taking a penalty, mark that on their sheet/in the app.

• Verify that everybody who wants to play knows what to do, and they’re ready to begin!
